Butterfly 'More Schools'

The English Schools’ Table Tennis Association is pleased to announce the launch by Gerry Sutcliffe, MP, Minister for Sport, of the Butterfly ‘More Schools’ Project at the Youth Sport Trust Sports Colleges Conference held at the Telford International Conference Centre on 31st January/1st February 2008.

Gerry Sutcliffe, MP, Minister for Sport,
launching the Butterfly ‘More Schools’ Project

The Butterfly ‘More Schools’ Toolkit consists of a range of material for starting and developing table tennis in both Primary and Secondary schools.  It moves through ‘Enjoyment and Participation to Performance’ in both basic practice and all levels of intra and inter school team and individual competitions.  There is the added incentive for Competition Organisers of the provision of Certificates of Participation and Achievement, together with engraved Trophies.  ESTTA believes that this Toolkit will be the catalyst to promote the participation of more schools in competitive table tennis leading to greater involvement in their Team and Individual Championships.

The Toolkit, (click here for an index of the toolkit) currently being trialled around the country, has promoted positive response:

  • This is just what my staff have been asking for – fantastic!
    (Senior Competition Manager)
  • Great pack – loads of useful recourses for Primaries and Secondaries.
    (School Sport Co-ordinator)
  • Very positive – I like the ideas for ‘alternative’ table tennis tables i.e. PE benches and ordinary tables.
    (Partnership Development Manager)
  • Excellent ideas on maximising space and equipment. (Head of PE)
  • Very clear with great ideas for schools with and without table tennis tables. (PDM)
  • Excellent resource cards with skills and drills for pupils to explore – easy to use – very structured.  (PDM)
  • A good starting point for Year 4/5 pupils.  Good templates for competition which together with the Butterfly Skills Programme provides testing but achievable goals. (PDM)
  • FREE TO SCHOOLS, PARTNERSHIPS AND COMPETITION MANAGERS!

The Association is committed to raising the profile of table tennis and is currently modernising its communication links with all schools promoting table tennis in both curricular and extracurricular activities.  It is the partnership between Butterfly and the Association with support from Sportsmatch that makes this possible.
