Hot Topic
In 1998 new rules and legislation were being introduced to try and generate more interest in the game from a new player and from a spectator’s point of view, the main areas of contention were long pimples and speed glue, not that different from debates happening at the moment then.

New regulation
The reduction of long pimples from 1.3 to 1.1mm in an aim to make the game better to play and watch. This ruling went to a vote and it was a close run thing, coming out 20-17 in favour, but with nations such as China, Japan and England voting against the regulation.

At the time many of our top players were using long pimples, so that would have a great effect on us as a playing nation. Carl Prean, Matthew Syed and Andrea Holt would have to adjust to a new rubber and style of play. It was argued that by banning speed glue (which is now in effect) a similar effect would happen and it would create a more even playing field.

Ten years on
Speed glue has now been banned on health grounds, this should reduce the overall speed of the game and long pimples are in question again.
